Pub Of The Week: The Fleece Inn, Holme

The Fleece has earned itself a reputation as a “good food” pub and is beloved of regulars and the many walkers who use it as a starting / finishing / stopping-off point on the many treks around this part of the lovely Holme Valley.

In summer, the narrow road heading off over Holme Moss and into Derbyshire is often clogged with vehicles, so it makes sense to perhaps park elsewhere, do a short walk and call in at the Fleece on route.

In winter, the village – and, hence, the pub – can be snowed in for days, but there is always a warm welcome, a hearty meal and a small but diverse offering of guest beers. It’s the ideal stopping-off point on a crisp December day.

This is a real country pub where quality counts – from the friendly staff to the excellent fare – which explains why, particularly on Sundays, the pub is usually packed with stockinged-footed walkers (muddy boots left at the door, please) rubbing shoulders with several generations of families eating heartily.

The menu is stocked with plenty of fresh, local offerings, but the Fleece has become synonymous with its pies, which come in numerous forms.

So much so that there’s even one night a week devoted to them.

The pub, like many in these parts of the Pennines, is closed all day on Mondays, except bank holidays, and it’s always best to book at busy times, although the staff will inevitably do their best to find you a spot should you arrive unannounced.
