Pub Of The Week: The Goodmanham Arms

Despite the A1079 Beverley to York road being one of the busiest in the county, there can’t be many passing travellers who bother to turn off it at Market Weighton to wet their whistle.

The town has surprisingly few decent boozers but if they go the extra mile into the neighbouring village of Goodmanham they will find one of the friendliest pubs in the East Riding.

Until a couple of years ago, the Goodmanham Arms was run pretty much as a hobby, in that it opened only sporadically. The pub is now transformed in attitude and offering. These days, it wins CAMRA awards for the seven regularly-rotated cask ales. It serves delicious locally-sourced food and pulls in a clientele made up of everyone from doctors and businessmen to farmers and mechanics and – a sign of a truly great boozer – they all banter in the bar without ever once mentioning their bank balances.

To thank for this renaissance we have Abbie and Vito Logozzi. Vito is Italian and his influence can be most keenly felt come winter, when they cook hog roast on an open fire or throw game and fowl into a pot roast which slow cooks all day long. Just when you think it couldn’t get any better, there will soon be a brewery round the back as well. As soon as things quieten down enough to get on with it, the Goodmanham Brewery will be supplying ales.
