Pub Of The Week: The Hare and Hounds, Dore

The Hare and Hounds apparently started off life as a coaching inn, and then, in the way of things, found out that it would be a more viable business as a butcher’s.

And then a post office. Happily, this lovely old building is now firmly back in the bosom of the licensed trade.

The Hare is all a really good local should be. On a mid-week lunchtime there were several gentlemen of a certain age sitting with their newspapers. In another corner, a group of younger drinkers ordered the biggest sharing fudge brownie sundae that you could possibly imagine.

The bars lead, warren-like, off each other, and one of the large ones has an impressive billiards table and a large-screen TV. But the rest is a series of nooks and crannies, all beautifully refurbished, with comfortable seating and dozens of photographs of the Sheffield of yore.

The food here is very much “chain pub grub”, but of a far better quality than elsewhere – a Cumberland sausage twist sandwich fair hit the spot. And a couple of beautifully kept pints of Abbeydale’s Moonshine went down pretty well, too. Good to see The Hare supporting local breweries, Abbeydale being one of the best there is. They also serve John Smith’s, and guest ales like a Greene King IPA.

The beer garden, on a sunny day, would be an ideal place to sit back at leisure, raise a glass or three and watch the world go by. Dore still boasts a good range of local shops and facilities, and there are other pubs to choose from. Hopefully, we’ll get around to them later. But, for the moment, The Hare and Hounds is highly recommended for its character, its individuality, and its welcoming feel-good factor.
