Pub Of The Week: The Manvers Arms, Adwick Upon Dearne

The Manvers boasts Noey’s Restaurant as well as its bars, and it has, by all accounts, an enviable reputation. Certainly what was on offer was hugely enticing, and tends towards comfort food, lovely things like bangers and mash and liver and onions. But, vegetarians out there, you are sympathetically catered for as well and if you’re planning to sample Sunday lunch, its advisable to book in advance.

There are a some good cask ales available, and a pint of Black Sheep was supped admiring old sepia framed photographs of Adwick in the days when there were butcher’s boys and when shopkeepers wearing crisp white aprons leant proprietorially in their doorways.

There’s a real community feel to the Manvers, which has a large car park to the right of the main entrance, and which stands right next to the road on the other. The Manvers family whose coat of arms graces the inn sign, by the way, owned the Manvers Colliery nearby, and much else besides. Oh, and the best place to sit in the bar is either next to the open fire, or on a crescent-shaped, well-padded and hugely comfortable banquette just around a corner. Settled into that, with some good tucker in front of you, who would want to move?
