Pub Of The Week: Strines Inn, Bradfield Dale, Sheffield

Built in 1275, this characterful pub on the spectacular Strines Moor straddles the Yorkshire/Derbyshire border and was built as a manor house for the Worrall family who were Yeoman farmers.

It became an inn around 1771 and has been dispensing good beer and cheer ever since.

Outside, spectacular views, acres of eating, drinking and playing space (and rather quirkily, strutting peacocks) so bring the family, they’ll be very welcome. It’s lovely in the summer, but I always think of it as a winter pub, a place to hunker down when the snow arrives and the sharp winds blow – which they’re wont to here, it’s pretty high and remote.

There are roaring fires to cluster round in both cosy rooms, and the beams and sepia photos on wonky walls let you know you’re in an old place (plus more gleaming horse brasses and copper pots than you can shake a stick at) – refreshingly there’s not a whiff of Farrow & Ball here. There’s quite a menagerie of stuffed animals too, so the ultra-squeamish might want to look away.

Honest pub grub is the order of the day, so expect the likes of steak and ale pie, giant Yorkshire puddings full of pork or beef, liver and onions – all great rib-stickers if you’re thinking of striking out across the moors. Jennings Cocker Hoop, Kelham Island Pale Rider and Marstons Pedigree are on tap with another couple of guest beers rotating. Inexplicably, the coffee is fantastic too – a bit of a rarity in far-flung country pubs!
