Pub Of The Week: The White Bear, Masham

It would not be unreasonable to expect good things from a pub sited within spitting distance of a brewery.

The White Bear at Masham is such a pub, and in fact is the “tap” for Theakstons Brewery and offers not good but great things under the watchful eye manager of Sue Thomas.

The original White Bear pub was bombed in the Second World War and this incarnation has had its own fair share of distress when closed for several years in the 1990s.

The pub was bought back from a major brewery by the Theakston family and, after a thorough sprucing up and the addition of a stylish dining area, was reopened. More recently a rather smart hotel and conference centre in the former brewery offices was also added. Mercifully, despite the designers and decorators romping through the buildings, great care has been taken to keep the tap room unchanged. This area is the heart of the pub and is what pulls the locals, beer lovers and me in.

The White Bear holds the Cask Marque for the quality of their cask ales which (unsurprisingly) boasts all the Theakston stalwarts and guest ales. The wine list is extensive.

There’s a seriously good á la carte menu in the dining room and, given the pub’s location in the heart of the Dales, comes stacked with locally sourced produce. Expect more relaxed but equally excellent fare in the bar.

If the great beer and food is not enough of a talking point while propping up the bar, ask about the fearsome-looking stuffed bear grizzling down at you. He’s quite famous.– Elaine Lemm
