Off the shelf

Here is this week's top pick of good value bottles to savour

Domaine St Gabriel Viognier 2008, Vin de Pays d'Oc, Co-op down from 7.99 to 5.99 until March 23. Distinct apricot aromas lead into honeyed peachy fruit on the palate. This is a silky, full-flavoured wine, worthy of pitching against spice-roasted chicken or mild creamy curries.

Kaituna Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2009, New Zealand, Marks and Spencer down from 7.99 to 5.99 until April 5. Made by Montana but this M&S blend packs distinctive, clean, bright, citrussy fruit, layered with green herbaceous flavours and a crunchy minerally finish.

Casillero del Diablo Carmenre 2008, Chile, Sainsbury down from 7.12 to 4.75 until March 16. No apologies for mentioning this brand yet again because it consistently over-delivers terrific flavours at competitive prices, especially when on offer.

Cosme Palacio Rioja 2007, Spain, Sainsbury down from 9.18 to 6.11, until March 16. A modern style Rioja with bright raspberry fruit showing cleanly above the oak, balanced tannins and a rounded finish. Perfect with roast lamb.
