The guide contains over 5,000 entries from across the UK, but each year awards are handed out to the most highly-rated hostelries in several categories.

This year, The Durham Ox at Crayke, near Easingwold, has made it into the overall top 10. The 17th-century coaching inn is described as 'popular with both locals and visitors' and is praised for its old-fashioned lounge bar and furnishings, as well as its selection of interesting spirits and locally made gins.

In the dining pubs category, Shibden Mill Inn near Halifax has been included for its exceptional gastronomic offer. The Blue Lion at East Witton has been named among the top traditional inns while Nigel Stevens of The Wyvill Arms in Constable Burton features in the list of the best licensees.

Awards are also handed to pubs specialising in particular drinks. The Maltings in York is included in the top 10 beer pubs in the country, while The Pack Horse Inn at Widdop, near Hebden Bridge, has been acclaimed for its whiskies.

Other entries in the general section of the guide include The White Horse & Griffin in Whitby - an historic pub with links to Captain Cook - and The Boar's Head in the estate village of Ripley, near Harrogate.

A spokesperson for the Great Inns of Britain group, which includes Shibden Mill Inn and The Blue Lion at East Witton, said: "Considering the incredible difficulties faced by this industry in 2020, these awards are a true testament to the hard work and passion of the people who run these establishments.

"With lockdowns, restrictions and tier systems being introduced from every direction, all of these pubs have had to adapt and adjust at speed to meet these new requirements and ultimately, keep their loyal customers safe. The awards highlight that even in the midst of a pandemic, these pubs continue to strive for greatness and never let the standard of service slip."
