The Crown at Elsecar: Looking for a good no nonsense proper pub? Look no further

The Crown in Elsecar is very much a community pub, and one where conversations are struck up.

The gentleman who got to the bar just before I did, ordered himself a pint of Chantry’s Black Diamond Stout – presumably named by that splendid local brewery after the coal that was mined in these parts, on the vast estates of the Earls Fitzwilliam.

Their remarkable contribution to the industrial revolution, just down the road in what is now the Elsecar Heritage Centre was - for its time – forward-thinking and highly progressive.

The gent took his pint to a nearby vacant table, and, after a few sips, volunteered his thoughts on his choice. He wasn’t loquacious, or intrusive, he was just being friendly, and this is what this rather special pub is all about. It has a personality all its own.

Set back a good few yards from a busy road, it is warm, and embracing and run by people with a bit of character. Which makes it something special, and worth seeking out. There’s one large room to the right as you enter, with a further rear conservatory.

There’s a snug, all old-fashioned scarlet plush and with a large window looking to the hills beyond. To the rear there’s a huge beer garden, with an extensive children’s play area.

To the front, a decent-sized car park, a few tables, and in summertime they boast some of the brightest hanging baskets to be found in these parts. The Crown is just down the hill from Elsecar station, an easy enough descent into its cheery welcome.

If you enjoy good (and very well-kept) beers from the Chantry, Acorn and the Abbeydale outlets, there are always three good ales from them and other local leaders on the counter. There’s a good range of lagers and ciders as well – and Guinness too.

A wide selection of food comes in generous portions at sensible prices, and there’s a special offer for those advancing in years, where you can get two large courses for around a tenner.

The décor is cosy, rather than over-done innovation. Here’s a good, down to earth, no nonsense, comfortable old proper pub. Long may its doors be open.
