The Royal Oak, Old Malton: The Grade II-listed pub in Yorkshire which is 'everything a pub should be'

The Royal Oak came highly recommended to me as a cracking pub, and I agreed wholeheartedly after my visit. The Grade II listed pub, first registered as an alehouse in 1780, is in Old Malton, just a mile from the town centre. The pub has been changed many times over the years from initially two old cottages to how it looks now, seemingly a timbered building; this transformation, though, only took place post-First World War.

Inside, the Royal Oak is charming with low ceilings, a tiled floor, a fireplace and a couple of snugly rooms, one of which houses the bar, which after changes over the years, is now back in its original location. It is packed on a Tuesday evening; drinkers crowded around the bar, every table is full of diners, and even the pretty beer garden is busy under the covered area as drinkers try to avoid the frequent rain showers.

Despite being packed, we are greeted warmly. The atmosphere is delightful and noisy, with happy customers. Landlord Steven Purcell nips here and there, chatting with everyone, delivering food and drinks and ensuring everyone is happy. We discuss drinks with the young girl behind the bar and are astounded by how quickly she cheerfully rattles off information on beers and wines. Guest beers change often, but one regular is Royal Oak Pub and Kitchen pale ale brewed by Yorkshire Heart, which is excellent.

There is a traditional food menu with parts having a South African feel as Stephen is originally from there, so a humongous Bunny Chow was for the husband, delicious Whitby scampi and chips for me.

The Royal Oak is everything a pub should be. Stephen and wife Amanda and their team have nailed it. Great atmosphere, excellent beers, hearty unpretentious food and smiles all around. What more could anyone possibly want? Oh, and there's a beer festival here in August. See you there.
