Video: Best of the York Food Festival

Around half a million hungry visitors have started descending on York for the historic city’s 15th Food Festival.

The 10-day foodie extravaganza will celebrate some of the finest produce Yorkshire has to offer, with a series of mouth-watering events planned throughout the city.

This year’s theme, Dine at My Table, will see Sister Agatha of the Bar Convent hosting guests at England’s oldest living convent, while Masterchef finalist Sara Danesin Medio will entertain at her home.

Other highlights include a live cook-off featuring three top Yorkshire chefs who went head-to-head in BBC2’s Great British Menu, as well as a wine tasting event, which will see different wines paired up with Yorkshire food.

The event, which is supported by Visit York, City of York Council and Welcome to Yorkshire, kicks off on Friday and festival director Michael Hjort said it was expected to be the biggest yet.

“It’s going to be fantastic, there is so much for people to do all day and all evening,” he said. “We have made a concerted effort to feature more Yorkshire producers than ever at the event.

“We are expecting almost half a million people to come thorough the festival over the 10 days. They are all potential future customers for local producers, so it’s a very important event for the region.”
