Yorkshire brewery launches new beers 'for' and 'against' EU

It's well known for its award-winning traditional ales but a Harrogate independent brewery is breaking with tradition by offering beer fans its own version of the EU referendum.

To mark the forthcoming EU Referendum on June 23, Daleside Brewery is launching two delicious new beers next week.

The aim is to create a light-hearted contest to see which beer - “ EU In “ or “ EU Out “ - proves to be most popular with consumers and in turn receives the largest share of the votes.

To support the launch, the brewery will post the results weekly on Fridays through social media, culminating with the announcement of the overall winner on June 22, the night before the crucial referendum.

Daleside’s business development manager, Vincent Staunton said: “We are extremely proud about the quality of the beers that we brew and this somewhat tongue-in-cheek contest will provide our customers and consumers the opportunity to give us some feedback into the style of beer that they prefer.”

With an international market and a legend of ‘Beers of distinction’, Daleside’s most popular beers such as Daleside Blonde, Old Leg Over, Monkey Wrench and Ripon Jewel have become regular award winners since it moved to its present premises at Starbeck in 1992.

Under the stewardship of managing director Eric Lucas and head brewer Craig Witty, Daleside has proven a favourite with judges from both CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) and SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers Association).

Unlike the new breed of craft beer microbreweries, Daleside isn’t in the habit of producing small batches of new varieties of ale every couple of months.

As befits the divisive issue of Europe, the two new beers offer completely contrasting flavours.

Daleside EU In is a golden fruity ale with a strength of 4.0%.

Daleside EU Out is a light, hoppy ale of the same strength.

Business development manager, Vincent Staunton said: “As part of the roll out next Monday we will be encouraging our customers to take both beers and have them on the bar at the same time, to see which beer proves to be the most popular with consumers.

“We will be inviting our customers to send us their results to create an interactive campaign in the battle of the beers.”

Although the brewery has expanded its facilities at its Harrogate plant over the years, most notably in 1992, 1995 and 1999, it has remained committed to the full traditional brewing process.

Daleside has its own yeast, uses only Harrogate water and brews with the best quality malts, whole-leaf hops.
