Best in Beverley: this historic home has been beautifully crafted

Pinewood is a landmark building in one of Beverley's best locations. It is also testament to the craftsmanship of the famous wood carver, cabinet maker and medievalist James Elwell, father of the famous painter, Fred Elwell.

He transformed what had been a Georgian brewery owner’s property into a substantial six bedroom home with exquisite detailing.

Many of the features, added during the modernisation in the late 1800s, were inspired by Elwell’s association with Gothic revival architect Sir Gilbert Scott.

The front door is one of the best examples of Elwell’s carving. The upper panel displays a scene from the Charles Dickens fairy tale novella “The Cricket on the Hearth”. It depicts toymaker Caleb Plummer and his blind daughter, Bertha, by the fire. Beneath this is the quote “We like to go as near nature as we can for sixpence”.

It is very apt as although the property is on North Bar Without in the town centre, it sits in extensive gardens and is in walking distance of Beverley Westwood’s pastures and racecourse.

The house is grade II listed due to its abundance of important architectural features, which were part of the appeal when Gillian Morrison and her husband, David, bought it 21 years ago.

The property was in need of restoration and updating and the couple enlisted the help of architect Jonathan Hobson.

“We liked the big rooms and the location close to where David grew up but it was a year before we moved in. There was an awful lots of work to do starting with a new roof. It was worthwhile because it is such a lovely house to live in and it has been wonderful for the grandchildren,” says Mrs Morrison, who is selling to downsize.
