When work prompted a relocation from Surrey to Yorkshire, David and Sian Waring had no idea what to expect. Now, 14 years on, they are evangelical about its many charms. “We have been blown away by Yorkshire. It is an amazing place and lives up to its reputation as God’s own county,” says Sian.

This feel-good factor was enhanced by finding the perfect home, which is now on the market for £1.695m with Dacre, Son and Hartley. After house hunting in Ilkley, they realised they wanted somewhere more rural with a large garden. They found what many buyers dream of in The Hawthorns, a detached Edwardian house in Burley-in-Wharfedale.

It sits in a private spot on the edge of countryside and has 1.2 acres of landscaped gardens but it is just a short walk from the village railway station with its commuter links to Leeds.

“It’s a great location because we are on the end of a private road but it’s only a 10-minute walk to the station and the village and a 10- minute walk onto the moor where we walk the dog. It’s also a very short drive from Ilkley,” says Sian.

The Warings have completely renovated the property since buying it. The work included creating a large, split-level living kitchen. “I had never done a big project before this but I really enjoyed it and it gave us the perfect home for us and our three sons. They have loved living here and, because of the rail links, it has given them a lot of freedom to be independent and not rely on us driving them everywhere,” says Sian, who is selling the house to downsize now her sons have grown-up and left home.

The Hawthorns has a reception hall, family room, dining room, stunning drawing room, snug and a living kitchen. There is also a cloakroom and WC, wine cellar and a pantry on the ground floor. There are six bedrooms across the first and second floors, including a principal suite with dressing room and en-suite bathroom. The other bedrooms are served by two stylish bathrooms.
