The colours are already changing, a sign that autumn is well on its way and that there's work to be done in the garden...

Divide herbaceous perennials. This will keep plants healthy and vigorous year after year and multiply your stock.

If you want to stop debris accumulating in your pond, cover it with a net.

Clean out cold frames and greenhouses ahead of autumn sowing and growing.

Begin to plant spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses and hyacinths.

Continue to feed and deadhead hanging-basket (pictured) and container plants – they will often keep going until the first frosts.

Keep deadheading annuals and perennials to extend their performance.

Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they’ve finished flowering (unless they are repeat-flowering varieties, in which case leave them until later in the year).
