The architect and developer were inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement when they designed and built this six-bedroom detached house.

But while the exterior pays homage to a previous era, the interiors are thoroughly modern thanks to the owners’ decision to do the fit-out themselves. Lars and Zoe Tibell bought the house in 2010 from Wharfedale Homes and hired bespoke interiors specialist Clarity Arts to make a contemporary oak veneer kitchen. The company, based in Summerbridge, also designed and made the office cabinetry and the built-in bedroom furniture.

The Tibells moved to Boston Spa, near Wetherby, to be close to family and were attracted by the property’s location. “It’s a no-through road with only three other houses on it so it’s very quiet but we are only a short walk into the village,” says Lars.

Hickory House, which is on Oaks Lane, has 5,469 sq.ft of space and is set in a grade II listed walled garden. There is Amtico flooring throughout the ground floor with the exception of the kitchen and utility room where there are limestone tiles by Lapicida, warmed by underfloor heating. The property has CAT 5 wiring throughout and an AV system with integrated speakers in many rooms.

At the heart of the home is a galleried hall leading to the drawing room and a separate dining room with spiral staircase. The stairs lead to the gym and shower room. The ground floor also has a large family room, now used as an office, a games room and a dining kitchen with Miele appliances, including two ovens, coffee machine, boiling hot water tap and wine cooler. This leads to a utility room and a cloakroom. The first floor has a master bedroom with dressing room and en-suite, guest bedroom with dressing room and en-suite and three further bedrooms, one with a dressing room and each with an en-suite.

Outside, the walled rear garden is lawned and planted with trees, flowers and shrubs. It also has an electricity socket, lighting, two water taps, a croquet shed and large terrace. The property also has a double garage with electric door.

Lars and Zoe are selling to move somewhere smaller. He says: “We’ve come to realise that a six-bedroom house is too big for just the two of us but we plan to stay in the village. It’s become very vibrant over the past few years with some great places to eat and drink and it has very easy access to the A1.”
