Built in 1922, this exceptional house on the edge of town has breathtaking sea views and is just 10 minutes walk from the beach. Dunholme on Sandsend Road is now for sale for £625,000 with Blenkin and Co.

Owners Kath and Peter Weatherill bought the property 20 years ago after falling in love with the views and the location. The four-bedroom house was commissioned by a Mr Dunn, a musician who played in the orchestra in Whitby during the summer months.

Captivated by the natural beauty of the coast, he purchased a plot of land and had Dunholme built so he could enjoy the outlook.

The Ministry of Defence was also impressed with the view and elevated setting. They requisitioned Dunholme during the Second World War because of its strategic position overlooking the bay.

Since buying the property, Kath and Peter have carried out significant improvements that have made their home even more desirable.

They have upgraded and reconfigured the internal space and added a two-storey extension, which created two reception rooms on the ground floor and a large bedroom with an ensuite bathroom upstairs.

The piece de resistance was replacing a uPVC conservatory with a beautiful, green oak-framed garden room, which has a vaulted ceiling and is warmed by a Charnwood stove.

“We spend a lot of time in there and we had it built so we could enjoy looking at the western sky as the sun is setting, while having a bigger view across the hills and headland and out to sea.”

Leaving this behind when they sell will be difficult but the couple, who have a holiday let business, are downsizing and are planning to retire.

“We will miss this house and hope someone will love it as much as we have,” says Kath. “We are moving to a smaller house in town, which we can lock up and leave, so we can spend more time with our family.”
