This large and luxurious house is a great example of how you can exploit the potential of a humble bungalow. The Glades, which is on the market for £900,000 with simonblyth.co.uk, began life as a single-storey dwelling. It was later sold and the new owners added dormers and turned it into a nursing home with accommodation for themselves upstairs and bedrooms for residents on the ground floor.

When Jill and Steve Fearnehough bought it 20 years ago, they had plans for a much grander design. “We had been looking for a plot of land to build on but we couldn’t find what we wanted. We saw this house, liked the location and thought we could turn into the sort of home we wanted to live in,” says Jill.

One of the first jobs was to take off the external cladding, which the Fearnehoughs say made the property look “like Jack and Vera’s house on Coronation Street”.

They also added two major extensions, along with a balcony on the master bedroom and completely reconfigured the layout inside.

“We also put more windows in, which makes the rooms lighter and gives us great views of the garden from every elevation,” says Jill.

The couple, who own a scaffolding company, also added a tennis court as Jill is a keen player. She says: “I grew up with tennis. My mum played it competitively until she was 76 and my sister and two nieces also play competitively so the court has been used and enjoyed.”

She and Steve are selling to downsize and spend more time at their second home in Spain. “I have absolutely loved living here and will be sad to leave. It is the best of both worlds. It is semi-rural so you can look out over fields and you are close to Bretton Country Park and Newmillerdam but there is also easy access to the M1 and M62 and the train station at Wakefield.”
