If all you want from a tulip is a lovely flower, then Tulipa Turkestanica is not a bad choice.

Its lovely star-shaped white and yellow blooms appear in early spring, particularly where the sun shines and the soil is dry.

If you haven’t got such a site, plant them in containers and stick them against a sheltered, south-facing wall.

They grow to perhaps a foot in height. Oh, don’t expect to be enthralled by their fragrance – they smell rather unpleasant.
