There are lots of reasons to love Remodelista, the American sourcebook and interiors website. Over the past decade it’s been showing followers how to create minimal but not monastic interiors with a mix of high and low priced, vintage and new designs.

To achieve a streamlined space you need to hide clutter, which is why Remodelista has published the definitive guide “Redmodelista: The Organised Home”. It’s a room-by-room manual on storage tactics. Here are a few of our favourites:

*Hang it: Lacking drawer space? Hooks, pegs and peg rails are the answer for keeping things organised and handy. The beauty of this approach is that these items cost next to nothing and they are easy to use.

*Sort it: Group like with like to create cohesion and line up identical things, such as wooden coat hangers (white for shirts, natural wood ones for trousers), wire baskets and cardboard binders. It’s a trick used by architects and designers to create a look of order.

*Label it: Name what you’ve got and know what you’ve got and where it goes. Use a Sharpie, washi tape or price tags/luggage labels and attach to drawers and baskets.

*Cart it: From bar carts to industrial trolleys and vintage tea trolleys, there’s a range of compact wheeled storage. It is ideal for corralling collections of items in one place. Carts are easy to use and can be tucked away when not in use.

*Tray it: Grouping objects on trays is the equivalent of adding frames to artwork. Trays are the finishing touch that elevate what they contain and they create cohesion.

*Shelve it: Strategically placed shelves are one of the great organisational building blocks. Plant a ledge wherever you can use one. Ikea has some great low-cost shelving or at the top end of the market, there is the Mercedes of shelving - Vitsoe by Dieter Rams, www.vitsoe.com

*Stack it: There’s a world of stacking furniture worth seeking out, including the very useful Frosta stools from Ikea, which can also be used as side tables. Stacking is about using space efficiently but stick to small numbers of items. You don’t want to live surrounded by Jenga towers.

*Door it: Like walls, doors can be used to hold hooks, shelves and racks. However, resist fitting out every door. The goal is to create a few jangle-free spots in which to keep your most-used things.
