Hemingbrough Hall was built in 1842 for a local vicar as his own residence and it is a grand design.

The house, near Selby, which is now on the market with Carter Jonas for £900,000, echoes the Tudor revival style and the property displays many distinguishing features including steeply pitched gable roofs, elaborate masonry and arched doorways to name a few.

Over the past few years a comprehensive programme of refurbishment has been completed, preserving and enhancing the original character of the house while carefully adapting and upgrading it for modern family living.

Owner Rebecca Judge bought the property after taking fate into her own hands. “We had decided to move and managed to sell our own house in Hemingbrough. We were due to buy another property but the sale fell through.

“That was upsetting but as I was driving back home one day I passed the hall and decided I’d put a note through the door asking the owners if they would be interested in selling it.

“I had always admired it but didn’t think there was any chance that they would say ‘yes’.”

Luck was on Rebecca’s side. “The owner rang and said he was looking to sell. “I went to see it and was immediately blown away by the gardens. They were absolutely beautiful. The house is on a big plot and the house is in the centre of it. It is idyllic.”

The hall is striking and has a colourful past. “It was built by a vicar but it’s also been a hotel and a recording studio in the past. If walls could talk it would have a lot to say,” says Rebecca, who has left her own mark on it.

Fireplaces that had been uncovered now have stoves in them, rooms have been treated to grand chandeliers and the house has been redecorated. On the ground floor, there is a kitchen with adjoining dining/sitting room, a family room and a drawing room.

The first floor has five bedrooms, four of which have en suite bathrooms. There is also a study and a house bathroom. The hall also has a large loft and a cellar providing scope for further development. Outside, are gardens, a garage and parking areas.
