Pruning: Aiming to be a cut above the ordinary

THE sometimes prickly problem of spring pruning is the subject of two new courses for keen gardeners at the Thorp Perrow Arboretum and Woodland Garden, near Bedale.

Hosted by North Yorkshire gardening expert Nigel Harrison, the courses will run from 10am-4pm on Tuesday, March 22, and Wednesday, March 30.

Nigel, a college lecturer, will give practical advice and guidance on the correct pruning techniques for a range of plants, shrubs and trees.

He said: “There can be quite a lot of myth and mystery about pruning, so much so that some people are reluctant to try it.

“But, so long as the timing and technique are right, it’s a lot easier than you might think. The aim of the courses is to encourage people to have the confidence to pick up a pair of secateurs and have a go.”
