20 is plenty for city, says campaigner

THE man behind a national campaign for 20mph speed limits in towns and cities will be petitioning residents in York next month to glean more support.

Rod King, the founder of the “20’s plenty for us” campaign, will also meet with Labour councillors who have been pushing for lower speed limits to be introduced in the city.

Portsmouth was the first place in Britain to introduce a 20mph limit on all but its main arterial roads when the scheme was launched in March 2008. Towns and cities including Oxford, Leicester, Norwich and Newcastle-upon-Tyne have subsequently enforced similar zones.

Mr King will speak to members of the council’s shadow executive on Thursday, February 11, before attending the Micklegate ward committee meeting to discuss the campaign with residents.

Last summer, York Council officials said they would investigate introducing 20mph zones in specific areas, but would not pursue a city-wide limit.

The shadow executive will meet at the Guildhall at 5.30pm on February 11, while the Micklegate ward committee meeting takes place at the South Bank Club at 7.30pm on the same evening.
