7,000 cases of illegal alcohol seized in Barnsley

THOUSANDS of cases of beer and wine worth nearly £80,000 have been seized during an operation by customs officials in Barnsley.

Operatives from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) raided a commercial wholesaler in Hoyland where they uncovered more than 4,200 cases of beer and 3,000 cases of wine, including popular brands, that had been earmarked for sale without UK duty being paid on them.

HMRC said the duty evaded, which totalled more than 70,000 litres, was estimated at 79,000.

Stephen Charlton, senior officer for HMRC, urged local people that are aware of illegal alcohol dealings to contact them in order to prevent further losses to funds for public services.

"We have teams operating across South Yorkshire who are committed to stopping those dealing in illicit alcohol," he said.

"Our officers will seize suspect goods and individuals may face criminal prosecution.

"We ask local people to work closely with us in this fight against crime and would encourage anyone who is aware of illicit alcohol to contact our Customs' Hotline on 0800 59 5000," he added.
