A61 revisited: Art of Bob Dylan comes to spa town

“WHEN I paint My Masterpiece”, goes the title of the Bob Dylan song on one of his many greatest hits albums, released in 1971.

One would assume that he would not have predicted it would end up in a gallery in Harrogate 40 years later.

A new exhibition of limited edition signed prints of Bob Dylan’s sketches while on tour between 1989 and 1992, is currently on display at Castle Galleries in the spa town.

The drawings are taken from Dylan’s snapshots of countries while on tour, and the gallery says they are proving so popular, the exhibition is now being extended throughout this month.

“The crowds we are getting are bigger and bigger,” said gallery manager Francoise Mosey.

“On that tour he did more than 100 shows and in the downtime in between playing he sketched mainly to relax.

“Every two or three days he drew the views and the vistas that he was coming across.

“The drawings are very much the expression of someone looking out at the world as something he can’t be part of.

“He is the most famous man of our time. I’m sure if he came to Harrogate, half of England would suddenly be here.”

The prints are also being displayed in 30 other Castle Galleries across the country, including one in York.
