Abattoirs told to extend CCTV surveillance

ABATTOIRS should be filmed all the time, to put pressure on employees to stick to the rules, the RSPCA has said as it announced that closed-circuit TV will be a new requirement for its Freedom Food stamp.

CCTV has previously been a recommendation of the charity and half of the abattoirs involved in Freedom Food schemes already have it. But the RSPCA has hardened its line.

John Avizienius, of the RSPCA's farm animal science department, said: "All farmed animals deserve to have a painless and humane end to their lives. CCTV not only acts as a "preventative" measure, but also allows proper evidence to be collected if animal welfare is suspected of being compromised."
