Abbey to screen film made in its grounds

A MOVIE filmed in the grounds of an historic North Yorkshire Abbey will be shown at the World Heritage site as part of a new film festival which has been launched to celebrate the region’s history.

Visitors will be able to enter the Secret Garden at Fountains Abbey, near Ripon, when the 1993 adaptation of the Frances Hodgson Burnett novel is shown in the Great Chamber of Fountains Hall.

The marketing manager at Fountains Abbey, Alexa Morton, said: “The estate was used as one of the locations in the film directed by Agnieszka Holland, and provides the ideal setting for the festival screening.”

The film is being shown in association with Cine Yorkshire, Screen Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Film Archive as part of the Contrast/brilliance film festival, which launches this month.

The event, from September 22 to October 2, is Yorkshire’s first festival of archive film and television, and will give audiences the rare opportunity to see films from the British Film Industry archive on the big screen, as well classic features filmed in the county.

The Secret Garden will be shown at Fountains Abbey on September 23. Visitors will also have the chance to enjoy a guided tour of the Elizabethan manor house and walled gardens at 6pm before the screening starts at 7pm.
