Affordable homes to help families remain in village

OUTDATED flats for pensioners in Grindleford are set to be demolished to make way for 12 new affordable homes.

The Peak District National Park Authority has unanimously approved a planning application for the houses from social housing provider Dales Housing.

First, 12 flats in Mount Pleasant Court will be replaced with four affordable houses.

The second scheme is for six houses and two flats, for rent on a site off Mount Pleasant Road.

A survey previously found that there are 32 people who are in need of affordable housing in Grindleford and could not otherwise stay in the village.

The homes will be built largely of natural stone, with ‘green’ features such as photovoltaic roof-tiles for renewable energy.

Chairman of the planning committee, John Herbert, welcomed the decision and said: “We welcome these proposals which will go a long way to providing affordable homes for local families who may otherwise have to leave the area.

“We were very pleased to see that the final plans were the result of discussions with the architects and took into account representations from nearby residents.

“These will be well-spaced, traditional-style homes to replace a 1970s development that was always out of character for the village.”
