Alert as fire rips through industrial units

Four fire appliances remained at the scene of a huge blaze on the border between Sheffield and Rotherham yesterday, after 50 firefighters spent hours bringing the flames under control.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue sent 10 fire engines to the scene at the height of the incident in Meadowbank Road, near the Meadowhall shopping centre and the M1 on Wednesday night. The brigade was first alerted at around 6.55pm, after several industrial units, one of which was being used to store office furniture, caught fire. A cordon was put in place and several roads were closed.

Local residents were told to keep their doors and windows closed overnight because of the heavy smoke from the fire, but all restrictions had been lifted by yesterday morning.
