Anchors aweigh for Jubilee festival

Dozens of boats old and new will be turning out on Beverley Beck next year to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Plans being drawn up by the Beverley Beck Boating Association in conjunction with the Beverley Barge Preservation Society could see as many as 60 vessels taking to the water on June 3, the biggest turnout for three decades.

The event, starting at 10am, which will include shanty singers, dancers, and a steam organ, as well as historic vessels including the Syntan, a 63-year-old former Richard Hodgson working barge, will coincide with the spectacular River Thames pageant, which will see the Queen travel in the Royal barge, accompanied by a 1,000 strong flotilla on the River Thames.

The barge society’s deputy chairman Tony Hardwidge said: “There could be 50 or 60 boats you never know and will probably be the biggest turnout on the Beck for 30 years.”

Live TV coverage of the Thames pageant will be shown aboard the Syntan.
