Ancient fables mark latest stage in theatre for children

After a successful run of sell-out shows, including the Olivier award-winning production of The Railway Children and Peter Pan, the theatre has seen more families than ever come through its doors.

Now the theatre’s latest production of the Hare and the Tortoise, which is being co-produced with children’s theatre company Tutti Frutti, is set to boost audience figures once again.

The theatre’s artistic director, Damian Cruden, said: “Over the last 15 years York Theatre Royal have been determined to offer children and young people as much access to theatre as adults, both in terms of watching and participation.

“Our relationship with young people and families in our community is a very valuable one and by co-producing work for young people with Tutti Frutti it has allowed us to develop a really strong product for this audience.”

The play has been written by Brendan Murray, whose work has been staged in Europe, Japan, Australia, and the USA, and will include live music by Dominic Sales and design by Catherine Chapman, who worked on the theatre’s production of Wind in the Willows.
