Anguished mother of victim screams at 'evil' brothers

THE anguished mother of a young boy tortured, brutally beaten and sexually abused by two brothers near Doncaster branded them "evil" and screamed, "I hope someone does that to you," as they were locked up yesterday.

The brothers' actions were branded "sadistic" by a judge at Sheffield Crown Court yesterday as he ordered them to be detained until experts decide they are no longer a threat to the public. They will serve a minimum of five years.

Police have also said they will consider pressing charges against members of their family in light of their shocking home life.

Mr Justice Keith said the pair, now aged 11 and 12, had "got a real kick" from the savage 90-minute attack on two younger boys whom they lured to wasteland on the outskirts of Edlington last April. They beat the victims with bricks and heavy rocks, burnt them with cigarettes, choked them, cut them with sharpened sticks and broken glass and forced them to engage in sexual acts together, leaving one close to death and the other badly injured and deeply traumatised.

"The fact is this was prolonged, sadistic violence for no reason other than that you got a real kick out of hurting and humiliating them," the judge said. "Their physical and emotional scars will live with them for a very long time to come."

After the brothers were sentenced, the younger victim's sobbing mother, who had sat quietly throughout the three-day hearing as graphic details of what had been done to her son were revealed, exploded with pent-up rage.

Hammering on the glass of the public gallery she screamed abuse.

The brothers looked back, faces impassive, as they were taken away to serve their time in secure local authority units.

Their crimes were "truly exceptional", the judge had told them and he quoted from psychological reports which he said made "grim reading".

The families of their victims shook their heads at the five-year minimum sentence, back-dated to April 2009 when they were first locked away. One described it as "disgusting".

But the judge told them: "I have no doubt you would have preferred to see (the brothers) locked up for a very much longer time…but I hope you will appreciate five years is the very minimum they will serve."
