Anniversary appeal prompts new lines of inquiry into blaze murder

DETECTIVES investigating the murder of a 17-year-old girl who died in an arson attack in Barnsley 10 years ago say a fresh appeal for information has been “very encouraging”.

Over the past four days, police have been speaking to people in Royston, where Lindsey Scholes suffered fatal injuries in a fire in September 2001.

Officers have also been handing out flyers close to the scene, to gain information on the arson attack that led to Lindsey’s death.

Det Supt James Abdy said: “There has been substantial police activity in Royston over the 10-year anniversary weekend of Lindsey’s death.

“Officers have been making enquiries in the local community as well as answering phone calls in the incident room.

“So far we have received in excess of 15 pieces of information from the anniversary appeal, which have generated new lines of investigation.

“This is very encouraging and reiterates our belief that the answer to this case rests in or around the local community of Royston.

“In particular, I would like to appeal to anyone who is protecting the person responsible for this horrific attack to come forward.

“You may not have wished to speak out in 2001, but 10 years on, this is your opportunity to tell us what you know.”

Lindsey was staying with friends in Milgate Street when, on Saturday, September 8, a fire was started deliberately at the door of the house.

She was rescued by firefighters and taken to Barnsley Hospital, but died two days later.

Anyone with information should call police on 01709 443543.
