Apartment residents promised return of running water

Tenants and owners of apartments at West Point flats, in Wellington Street, have had to use an outside standpipe to fill buckets of water and use portable toilets for several days.

Some opted to move out and stay with friends or family or base themselves at hotels.

Damaged piping initially cut supplies to the flats last Wednesday lunchtime.

Efforts to make a repair on Saturday failed but yesterday the managing agents said they hoped repairs would finish today.

In a statement, Mainstay the agents responsible for the management of the building, said the repairs were expected to be completed yesterday and if that has adequately set overnight it is hoped the water supply could be restored.

The statement, issued yesterday, read: “All appropriate parties and specialists will return to site tomorrow to supervise the turning back on of the supply in a controlled manner and as long as there aren’t further issues presenting themselves, we expect that it will be late Wednesday at the earliest before water is fully restored at the development.

“At the moment, we cannot be precise until all works have been completed, but it is our hope that the building will be fully restored tomorrow.”

Leeds City Council’s environmental health manager Andrew Mason said environmental health officers had been at the site yesterday morning and were happy with the contingency measures carried out by building management company Mainstay.

He said residents had access to bottled water, 10 portable toilets had been installed and a water tank was also available.
