Architecture centre goes under the hammer
ONE of Hull’s most unusual buildings is to be sold at auction – providing the buyer can move it.
The Arc design centre has been turning heads since it was installed in Castle Street, near Hull Marina, in 2006, and has been used to promote interest in and understanding of local architecture. But now the building – which cost £750,000 to put together – is being sold off after the charity which ran it, The Humber Centre for Excellence in the Built Environment, went into liquidation.
It also has to be moved to make way for a redevelopment project and is expected to raise between £50,000 and £100,000 when it is sold by city auctioneers Gilbert Baitson on May 8. Partner Andrew Baitson said: “It’s not every day you get asked to sell a recyclable building. It’s like a giant Meccano set.”
