Army of enthusiasts marches on air museum for wheels and wings show

HUNDREDS of historic military vehicles from across the country descended on the Yorkshire Air Museum putting on a dazzling display for armed forces enthusiasts.

The air museum at Elvington, near York, hosted the Battlegroup North & Military Wheels and Wings Show this weekend, with more than 200 planes, jeeps, trucks and tanks on display.

Star of the show was a World War Two Douglas DC3 Dakota, which has been kitted out in its paratroop deploying role and is the first time the aircraft has been on outdoor display since a recent refurbishment.

Visitors were also treated to a flypast by a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, as seen during the recent Royal Wedding.

The two-day event also featured a number of living history displays from a variety of re-enactment groups, including the Normandy Arnhem Society, Victory in Europe Re-enactment Association (VERA), the Pontefract Home Guard and Lancashire 1940s Folk.

The Germans were also represented by the Frontline Association and groups from the Northern WWII Association.

Modelling clubs from York, Market Weighton, the Yorkshire Coast, Hull, Leeds, Rotherham and Cheshire also took part in the event.
