Art gallery visitor records at risk

HULL's museum chiefs are hoping two exhibitions at the city's Ferens Art Gallery will break all records this summer after attracting thousands of young visitors before the schools even broke up.

The Manic Mechanics and Ern Shaw exhibitions, which have been running since May and June respectively, will continue to welcome families throughout the holidays.

As well as the exhibitions there are also three cartoon activity sessions starting with Doodle Away today from 11am to 1pm.

Manic Mechanics, Moving Sculpture by Johnny White and Amanda Wray, has had more than 9,000 visitors in eight weeks.

The quirky and interactive metal artworks have had

adults and children pressing the buttons and pulling the levers and posting comments on the wall. The exhibition will run until September 5.

Meanwhile the Ern Shaw (1891– 1986): The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up exhibition saw more than 1,000 visiting the launch party and has had an average of more than 1,000 visitors a week since then.

The display of work from the 1920s to the 1980s range from cartoons of Hull's football and rugby clubs and political drawings, to designs for children's books and card games.

There is also a Cartoon Corner for children.
