Artist provides walk through inspirational landscapes

walkers who are new to Holmfirth are invited to follow in the footsteps of watercolour artist Ashley Jackson.

The Barnsley-born painter, who moved to Holmfirth in 1972, has devised a 2.5-mile walk which takes in scenes he has painted.

It begins outside Holy Trinity Church and takes in Underbank Old Road, Choppards Bank Road, Lamma Wells Road, Rotcher Road and Hollowgate.

A booklet, which can be downloaded from his website, shows several of his watercolours, so walkers can appreciate the views which inspired him.

One work – Overcast skies over Choppards – “represents the many friendly and welcoming men and women who live in the moorland farms of Yorkshire, whom have greeted me with a smile,” he said.

“They possess a special character; life has carved for them qualities that glow from within.”

He says the walk, launched yesterday, will appeal to families, couples and solitary walkers.

“I hope that many of you will view Holmfirth and the surrounding area with fresh eyes and enjoy the walk.

“I ask one thing only, that you occasionally stop along the way to drink in the fantastic landscape created by Mother Nature, but also be aware that the weather can turn quickly.”
