Artists encouraged to play a part in civic square project

ARTISTS who have produced public artworks in the past are being invited to register their interest in creating a piece for Doncaster's first civic square.

Work on the square, part of Doncaster's controversial new Civic and Cultural Quarter, will begin next year and is expected to be completed by 2013.

Those behind the scheme say they are looking for a "distinctive piece of integrated art that will become part of the public realm" and also be a focal point of the new cultural quarter.

Doncaster Council's cabinet member for businesses and regeneration, Coun Jonathan Wood, said: "The civic square is central to the transformation of the Waterdale area into a thriving business and leisure hotspot.

"It is important that residents and visitors are drawn into the new quarter and, by inviting artists to play their part, we can ensure the square becomes a major attraction in its own right."

All artists interested in the scheme should submit a letter of interest, with a CV and photographs of their previous work, by Friday, May 21.

Following this date, a selection panel will consider the applications and choose three artists to be added to a wider list of regional and national artists. One applicant will then be selected and invited to produce designs for the new piece of artwork.

Andrew Price, of Whitelaw Turkington, landscape architects for the Civic and Cultural Quarter project, said: "We are looking for an artist who can become part of the design team.

"They will enhance the creative process and help develop a distinctive work of public art that draws inspiration from the local character of Doncaster and is fully integrated into the public realm design."
