Artists get ready to open studio doors to public for 11th year of event

AN open studio event which celebrates the artistic talents of North and North-East Lincolnshire gets under way next weekend, starting on September 17, when artists will open their doors to the public for the 11th year.

This year 35 artists and nine galleries and arts organisations are taking part in the event, which also runs on September 24 and 25.

One artist is Gill Hobson, a studio artist at The Ropewalk in Barton upon Humber. A specialist in glass she creates one-off studio works as well as commissions in hand-made glass and metal. At North End, Goxhill, a new eco-friendly venue, A Place to Share, is opening its doors in a converted barn for the first time. Suzanne Dring will be creating art work outside the barn, including graffiti murals and mosaic pathways.

In Grimsby itself the Grimsby School of Art, Design and Performing Arts is one of the attractions. Here students will be working in the fields of design, fine art and new media approaches.

Artists from throughout our area will be opening up their studios on both weekends to enable members of the public to see them at work,” said Insight’s Project Manager Pete Mitchell. “They will be more than happy to explain and demonstrate the processes involved in developing their work.”

Last year more than 16,600 visitors came to the four-day event. This year Insight is hoping to attract similar numbers as more than 4,000 free brochures have been distributed at libraries, art galleries and tourist information centres.

The majority of exhibitors and galleries will be open during the two weekends between 10.30am and 5pm daily.
