Arty new shelter provides fresh view on Wolds Way

A new shelter for walkers and residents is going up on the halfway point of the most underwalked national trail in England.

The shelter, being installed on the village green in the Yorkshire Wolds village of Fridaythorpe, has been developed as part of Wander, a series of new artworks along the Yorkshire Wolds Way.

The new shelter is the latest addition to the trail which has already seen six benches, crafted by furniture designer Angus Ross, placed along the 79-mile route which runs from Hessle to Filey.

Villagers said they hoped the new shelter would be an asset to the village.

The chairman of the Fridaythorpe Wander Steering Group, Richard Pinder, said: “It is replacing a very tired old bus shelter. It’s somewhere where the kids can meet in the village, there’s nowhere else for them.

“A lot of people start and finish their walks here, it being the half-way point. It is somewhere for them to sit and enjoy the green and the pond.”

Gill Bell, who was on the steering group, added: “It has taken us a long, long time to agree with the architects and we have battled for what we wanted and hopefully it will be an asset.”

Designed by Leeds-based architects Bauman Lyons, it incorporates a laminated wooden frame and glazed panels which gives a view through the shelter.

The architects used a design process called BIM, a method of modelling all the information on a computer prototype and using it to laser cut all the elements.

It is expected to be finished later this month.

The cabinet portfolio holder for rural issues and cultural services at East Riding Council, Coun Jane Evison, said: “The new shelter will offer walkers and residents with a pleasant place to rest, close to the halfway point of the Yorkshire Wolds Way.

“The council is keen to promote tourism throughout the East Riding and particularly the picturesque Wolds, which have long been one of the area’s best kept secrets.

“Using funding from the Arts Council of England and LEADER, Wander is the first artwork commissioned for a national trail and the new shelter will fit in nicely with the other three commissioned pieces already completed.”
