The victim, who suffered facial injuries, has been named as Shabir Choudary, 52. He was discovered at his flat in Gill Syke Grove, in the Thornes area of the city, in the early hours of yesterday.

He was taken by detectives to a police station in Bradford and was due to be questioned later.

Police earlier took the unusual step of naming Zahir Aziz as a man they wanted to speak to in connection with their inquiries.

At a Press conference at Millgarth police station in Leeds yesterday, Det Supt Paul Taylor, of the West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, confirmed a murder inquiry had been launched.

He said Mr Choudary had been discovered at 3.25am yesterday. He was taken to Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, where he was pronounced dead.

Mr Taylor, who is leading the investigation, said house-to- house inquiries were being carried out and detectives were seeking more information about Mr Choudary and his life.

Mr Taylor told yesterday's Press conference he could not speculate on what had happened.

Scenes of crime officers were yesterday carrying out a full forensic examination of the scene.
