Awards show worth £1.5m to city

The awards, which will be held at the First Direct Arena on Wednesday, November 4, will also see more than 10,000 people descend on the city.

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “The build-up to the MOBOs has created a huge buzz in Leeds.

“Hosting one of the biggest music awards ceremonies in Europe is another massive statement of intent about our city’s ability to stage world class events.

“With the awards just a few days away, we’re looking forward to welcoming some of the biggest names in music along with thousands of fans and millions of television viewers around the world, which will be a major boost to our local economy and the city’s international profile.

“This is a real coup for Leeds and a fabulous celebration of music and diversity that will lay down an ambitious marker in our bid to be named European Capital of Culture 2023.”

The Leeds Business Improvement District (BID) worked with Leeds City Council and the First Direct Arena to help bring the MOBO Awards to the city.

Andrew Cooper, chief executive at Leeds BID, said: “The MOBOs have both a national and international audience, and we expect that this prestigious event will drive increased footfall, hotel occupancy and spend, alongside the huge PR and marketing value to the city.

“Bringing the MOBOs to Leeds demonstrates the collaborative working and ambition of the city in attracting a new events.

“It is also a great accolade for the city of Leeds to be chosen to host this award ceremony.”

Rita Ora, Ella Eyre, Krept and Konan, Stormy and Lianne La Havas are just a few of the names performing at the awards on Wednesday.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on ITV2 at 8pm.
