Back to the stone age

THIS aerial view from the top of York Minster shows a modern take on a medieval tradition.

On Saturday, to celebrate the opening of the Masons’ Lodge, the Minster reverted to the old days when a stone was taken by boat up the River Ouse to the Guildhall where it was loaded onto horse and cart and accompanied by a procession down Stonegate and Minster Yard.

Situated on the south-east lawn near the East End of the Minster, the Masons’ Lodge will allow visitors the chance to see masonry skills.
