Backing for five more holiday cottages on stately home site

Moves to redevelop a North Yorkshire stately home into a major hotel and leisure complex are set to clear another hurdle with permission to build more holiday cottages in the grounds.

Work started shortly before Christmas on a 30m scheme to turn 80-acre Raithwaite Hall at Sandsend into a luxury resort development, creating 150 jobs.

The Skelwith Group appointed family-owned Wates Construction as the main contractor for the development, which was given the green light by Scarborough Borough Council.

The estate already has 11 holiday cottages. The plans for the site include a 44-bed five star hotel and spa complex and further cottages.

Planning consent is now being sought for five new cottages on the estate, in the courtyard of the Home Farm Holiday Cottages site, just north of the big house.

The scheme includes altering and refurbishing two existing cottages, know as Woodcutters Cottage and Gamekeepers Cottage, and extending them to provide extra units.

Recommending approval for the scheme, Scarborough Council planning manager Jill Low said: "The development will provide quality tourist accommodation at a site that is largely hidden from view, being situated within a mature wooded valley.

"As a consequence of this setting, it will not result in any material impact on the landscape. Conditions are proposed to ensure control over detailing and in respect of environmental matters."
