Backing for homes bid turned down in 2006

AFTER being turned down four years ago, plans for a new housing estate in Grimethorpe may now be approved by Barnsley Council's planning board tomorrow.

When the plans for more than 100 new homes in Burntwood Road were considered in 2006 they were refused consent, as it was feared the scheme could have prejudiced other regeneration work happening at the time.

However, planning officers now say the situation has changed and planning permission for the Strata Homes development should be granted.

The scheme consists of nine one-bedroomed homes, 28 two-bedroomed homes, 51 homes with three bedrooms and 18 homes with four.

In a report set to go before tomorrow's meeting, Barnsley Council's planners say: "Grimethorpe was significantly harmed by economic restructuring, with 6,000 colliery jobs lost between 1970 and 1995 and a population decline of approximately 19 per cent during this period.

"Since then the area has been the subject of major regeneration projects such as the reclamation of the colliery, the completion of the new link roads in the area and the refurbishment of existing private and tenanted homes.

"However, the area has struggled to attract new residents, leading to a declining housing market and a poorer environment. New developments of an appropriate nature are needed in order to continue the regeneration of Grimethorpe."

A petition bearing more than 230 signatures has been submitted opposing the scheme, as well as 16 individual letters.

Objectors say the new homes would overshadow existing properties, would look out of place on the landscape and would create traffic congestion on nearby roads, especially at Ladywood Primary School.

However, planners say that permission for the development should be granted as it would "make Grimethorpe a more sought-after place to live by providing better choice and quality of housing".
