Bag-snatch alert for superstore shoppers

SHOPPERS in a North Yorkshire market town are being targeted by purse thieves who have travelled from as far away as London to prey on residents.

Police officers in Northallerton have launched a joint campaign with the town's supermarkets to target an increase in purse and handbag thefts.

Thieves are lying in wait for shoppers who leave their bags unattended in their trolleys or hung on the handle to turn away to pick an item from the shelves.

Shoppers often reach the check-out before realising their bag or purse is gone.

Sgt Julie Kessell said: "We have seen an increase in these types of thefts over the last few months and want to warn shoppers to be on their guard.

"By leaving your bag unattended, you are handing it to thieves on a plate. It's very easy to pop your bag in your trolley, believing it to be safe as it's right in front of you.

"However, it only takes seconds for thieves to catch you out as you turn your back to look at the shelves.

"Thieves are opportunist, the more obstacles you put in their way and the harder you make their life, the less likely you are to become a victim of crime."

The deputy store manager for Tesco in Northallerton, Adam Crooks, added: "It's distressing for customers who find themselves a victim and we will do all we can to help raise awareness and encourage people to be vigilant."

Participating supermarkets include Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsburys who will display posters.

The town recently suffered from a spate of purse thefts in the high street. But a purge led to a significant reduction and the jailing of a woman from London.

Police have been working with the Businesses Against Crime in Hambleton partnership to hand out more than 3,500 purse security chains.
