Bail overturned in screwdriver case

A MAN accused of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a 41-year-old repeatedly with a screwdriver has been remanded in custody only hours after being released on bail by Harrogate magistrates.

Stephen Francis Maughan, 26, of Station View, Starbeck, Harrogate, appeared in court yesterday charged with the attempted murder of Patrick Blakey, of High Skellgate, Ripon, at a flat in Strawberrydale Court, Franklin Road, Harrogate, last Friday. He did not enter a plea,

Court chairman David Uffindall released Maughan on bail under the condition that he continued to live at the address given to the court and observed a nightly 7pm to 7am tagged curfew there.

It was also ordered that he report daily to Harrogate police station and stay out of Ripon.

But following an appeal by Crown Prosecution Service lawyers against the decision yesterday afternoon, it was decided by magistrates that he should be remanded in custody.

Maughan will now appear at York Crown Court for a preliminary hearing today.
