band in tunewith village

Music at the church service was played by Cawthorne Brass Band, which has entertained listeners since 1873.

The village band does not take part in contests, but plays at about 20 events a year, mainly in the Barnsley area.

Entirely self-funded, it pays its way thanks to member subscriptions, formal concerts and engagements like fetes, galas and church services.

Trombone player Val Francis said: “The band was going quite strongly until the 1960s, when the numbers dropped and playing stopped for a while.

“A couple of old members started it up again in the 1970s, and we’ve been going ever since.

“We had a period where we had to move out of the village because we lost our practice space but, with funding, we were able to build an extension to the village hall so we could move back to Cawthorne last year.

“We have a thriving junior band, some of whom played during the harvest service.”
