Beach life beckons families who love to be beside seaside without the sea

FAMILIES took to the beach in Rotherham town centre yesterday, after a little bit of the coast was brought to the town's main square.

Sand and deckchairs were spread out in the sunshine in All Saints' Square as part of the council-run Rotherham-by-the-Sea extravaganza, which is now in its eighth year.

Activities during the event, which runs until Saturday, include a funfair, face-painting, bingo, and a knobbly-knee competition. Three days will also be themed around Egyptians, pirates and the fairy tale Snow White.

Youngsters will also be able to take part in craft workshops at the nearby Arts Hub in the Imperial Buildings and join a pirate treasure hunt.

Rotherham Council's events officer, Dawn Campbell, said: "We are hoping this year's Rotherham-by-the-Sea event will be the best yet as it's become a real tradition in the town centre.

"The people of Rotherham genuinely look forward to all the activities going on over the week, flocking to the square and really joining in the seaside spirit. We are just keeping our fingers crossed for the weather to be kind."

More details about the event are available at Rotherham's visitor centre, which is also in All Saints' Square, or by calling 01709 835904.
